Mike Doyle and David Price, two more veteran House Democrats, announce retirements

Two long-standing House Democrats announced Monday they would not be seeking reelection next election, complicating the party’s efforts to retain the majority.

Reps. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania and David Price of North Carolina, who together have more than 50 years of service in Congress, said they will not be returning after next year.

Mr. Doyle, 68, was first elected in 1994 and is part of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s inner circle. 81, Mr. Price is a senior member on the House Appropriations Committee.

The lawmakers were praised by their Democratic counterparts for this service.

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, New York’s chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee called Mr. Doyle “dean” of the Pennsylvania congressional delegation .’

“His work on many issues as a member and chair of Subcommittee on Communications and Technology and a member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee will have a lasting effect on our country. But his advocacy for Americans with autism and their families will be what I will always remember about Mike,” he stated. I will miss Mike, and I join my colleagues to thank him for his many years of public service .”

Republicans enjoyed the news and hoped for an increase in the playing field 2022, even though both lawmakers are located in safe Democratic districts.

Messrs. Price and Doyle won their respective districts in 2020.. Mr. Doyle, who represents Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District, won his last election with nearly 70% of the ballots cast.

Mr. Price, who represents North Carolina’s 4th Congressional District, won his last election with 67% of the vote.

The retirement announcement of Rep. John Yarmouth (a Kentucky Democrat who is also chairman of the Budget Committee) last week prompted the decision of two lawmakers to leave. Mr. Yarmouth will be leaving Congress after six terms.

“Democrats have fled for the exits as they realize their days in the majority are rapidly ending,” stated Calvin Moore, a spokesperson for the Congressional Leadership Fund. This political action committee is dedicated to electing Republicans into the House. “Why defend middle class tax increases, handouts for Pelosi, and the skyrocketing costs of living when it’s so easy to sail off into sunset ?”

National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Mike Berg boasted, “Smart Democrats are fleeing Congress as fast as humanly possible because they know Democrats’ majority is coming to an end.”

The NRCC is the campaign arm for the House GOP and has been hammering Democratic incumbents to get “outraised” by their Republican counterparts.
